The Maldives is located on the equator so naturally ,the weather in the Maldives is consistent with any other country that enjoys an equatorial climate. There are very different and distinct seasons, the South West, monsoon season which is referred to as the ‘wet season’ or “halhangu”, and the North East monsoon season know as the dry season or “iruvai”.

The Maldives climate can vary considerably between these two very different Maldives weather patterns. There is however hardly any variance in air and water temperatures, year round.

The northeast monsoon begins in January, lasting only until March. This is the warm as opposed to hot season of weather in the Maldives; the reason for this is that the Maldives are a string of small islands that are surrounded on all sides by the ocean.

So days that should in theory, be unbearably hot, are very often tempered by near constant sea breeze that brings a fresh, cooling action to the land.

The wet season starts in May and runs through until November, it is at its height in the June to August period and can produce torrential rains. Very severe weather, such as cyclones and tropical storms are rare in the Maldives area.

The other decisive factor of the Maldives climate is a North/South difference in weather patterns that separates the northern and southern atolls. The more southerly islands receive more rainfall than those to the north. Consequently, the Northern islands generally experienced higher temperatures, with less sporadic showers.

Conversely, when cyclones are formed to the north of the islands in the Arabian Sea on the Bay of Bengal, although not directly affecting the island, the weather in the Maldives can turn to huge dark clouds especially above the Northern islands.

Maldives weather experiences a transitional period that separates the monsoon seasons, beginning in April and terminating towards the end of May. During this period there may be some daytime light showers and slightly cooler temperatures in the evening.

December to April are considered the best to visit the islands when the weather in the Maldives is at its most pleasant. With lots of sunshine every day, beautiful skies and constant breezes keeping the temperature very compatible for tourist activities.

Average temperatures across the islands vary very little throughout the year, ranging from around 23° up to a maximum of 32°, the average hovering around the 30° mark throughout the year.

If you are not used to the sort of tropical climates experienced by the Maldives weather, it may be difficult to comprehend that although rain is frequent and occasionally heavy, a large part of the time this rain takes the form of very quick downpours, although some of these can be torrential. They often only last a few minutes and the sun quickly dries out its effects. There is a saying that you “cannot have paradise without rain”, and the Maldives qualify on both counts.

Thudfushi, Thulhagiri, Vadoo, Vakarufalhi and Velavaru

Thudufushi Island Resort Maldives

Thudufushi Island is a four star resort set in South Ari Atoll. It’s a 25 minute seaplane transfer from the capital. The island contains 47 rooms for guests to inhabit.

Thulhagiri Island Resort Maldives

The four star Thulhagiri resort is in the North Male Atoll containing 17 water bungalows and 55 beach bungalows. It’s a 25 minute speedboat transfer from Male.

The dining at Thulhagiri is highly reputed but guests will also enjoy the wide variety of activities, excursions and water-sports available.

Vadoo Island Resort Maldives

In South Male Atoll is the four star Vadoo Island resort with 31 rooms. It’s a short 15 minute trip from Male via speedboat.

This is a smaller island that can be enjoyed by many different types of visitors from honeymooners to divers. There is a PADI certified dive center and Vadoo Island Resort also offers additional water sports, excursions and some activities.

Vakarufalhi Island Resort Maldives

The four star Vakarufalhi resort is set in South Ari Atoll and is a 25 minute transfer by seaplane. There are 50 rooms available.

Dining at Vakarufalhi is typically on a full board basis and there is a main (Ilaa) restaurant serving the main meals although snacks are also available at the bar.

There are many activities & recreational facilities on offer - guests can choose from water & land sports, cultural activities, day excursions, snorkeling safari, morning/night fishing, dolphin cruises and general entertainment. It’s also possible to have a wedding. Diving courses are available and there is also a spa.

Velavaru Island Resort Maldives

Velavaru is one of the four star Maldives offerings. It’s based in Dhaalu Atoll and is a 45 minute seaplane ride from Male. There are 84 rooms - beach & deluxe beach bungalows and island beach bungalows.

Guests can dine at the Hathaa restaurant or kick back with a drink or two at the Muraka bar.

Velavaru offers a good choice of water & land sports, diving, a spa and multiple excursions & trips.
